SUMMARY:A Green Post-Capitalist Economy: Wishing to be ‘green’ isn’t enough
DESCRIPTION:The truth is that many socialists were “Johnny-Come-Latelies” to environmental awareness. But wanting an economy to be environmentally sustainable is not the same as designing an economy so that it will be environmentally sustainable. The model of a post-capitalist economy\, known as “a participatory economy” is a concrete description of how we can organise an economy based on democratic participation\, justice\, solidarity and which has now incorporated specific features to treat the natural environment in sustainable ways. \nIn this public talk\, economist and co-creator of the model\, Robin Hahnel will introduce the key features of a Participatory Economy including an innovative decentralised democratic planning procedure\, which empowers citizens to plan an economy themselves in an environmentally sustainable way. \nReserve your free spot at the event ->

SUMMARY:Democratic Economic Planning: How to Do it!
DESCRIPTION:Many today realise that neoliberal capitalism has become a disaster. Some believe the only realistic alternative is social democratic capitalism. Others believe market socialism is possible\, and even better. While others believe that democratic socialist planning is both possible and what is needed if humans are to survive and thrive during the 21st century. \nThere is now an active debate among those in this “third camp” over how democratic socialist planning might be organised and operate. The model that has come to be known as “a participatory economy” is one answer to this question. It is a concrete proposal for how to organize and coordinate annual participatory planning\, investment planning\, and several kinds of long-run development planning in ways that are fair\, efficient\, and environmentally sustainable. In this talk I will highlight its main features\, and also point out how it differs from others’ proposals for how to organise democratic economic planning. \nRobin Hahnel is a life long activist\, economist and Professor Emeritus from American University in Washington DC where he taught for thirty years. His work emphasises environmental sustainability and is best known for his work on an alternative to capitalism\, known as a Participatory Economy. His recent books include A Participatory Economy\, Democratic Economic Planning\, The ABCs of Political Economy and Economic Justice and Democracy. Hahnel is a member of the Participatory Economy Project. \nThe talk is free and open to the public. Registration not required. Room RHB144 in the Richard Hoggart Building.

SUMMARY:Democratic Economic Planning - Workshop with Robin Hahnel on his recent book
DESCRIPTION:In-Person Author meets Critics Workshop with Robin Hahnel on his recent book Democratic Economic Planning – 8.-9. June 23 @University of Potsdam \nThe participatory economics approach of Robin Hahnel provides a practical alternative to market capitalism. Hahnel emphasizes the importance of including citizens in the running of the economy. \nHis book Democratic Economic Planning provides a concrete proposal for an alternative economy based on social ownership and citizenship participation. It makes detailed practical suggestions on how to organize short-term and long-term planning of the economy to achieve efficiency in the use of resources\, environmental sustainability and a fair distribution of burdens and benefits. Citizens self-manage the planning process through worker and consumer councils. \nIn this author meets critics workshop\, we will explore whether Hahnel’s model provides a feasible alternative to capitalism and whether it would be able to realize normative ideals from a variety of traditions of political theory/philosophy. We bring together political theorists\, political philosophers and political economists to discuss the institutional arrangements needed to bring about ideals such as efficiency\, equality\, sustainability\, democratic participation\, and worker self-determination. \nThe different critical contributions will focus on various parts of Hahnel’s book and scrutinize the treatment of care work\, environmental sustainability\, worker and consumer participation\, distributive justice\, and the allocation of resources. \nContributors to the workshop will consider whether the model is able to overcome the Austrian school critique of planning\, whether it provides adequate methods for ensuring the efficient and sustainable use of resources\, and whether it solves some of the issues with other proposed alternatives to capitalism (e.g.\, market socialism and central planning). \nThe workshop is funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.\nThe workshop will be held from 8.-9. June 2023\, in person at the University of Potsdam. Unfortunately\, it is not possible to participate online. \nFor further information and to sign up contact Philipp Dapprich:\ndapprich[at]uni-potsdam.de \nSpeakers:\nProf. Robin Hahnel (American University\, Washington\, D.C.)
